The attached list is of textbooks in my studio.
The ones marked with ** should be in every serious students library.
The ones marked with * are of additional interest to those who teach.
The rest have had some influence on me as a teacher and performer.
Not included in the list are the books on Music Education and especially research on “neurobiology and learning” that fascinate me. I cover these in education classes that I teach at Mars Hill.
I constantly buy new books on music, composers, and performance.
For example, I am currently reading “Inside John Haynie’s Studio” by the master trumpet teacher. I’m also reading David Hickman’s “Trumpet Pedagogy.” Why trumpet books? Well, some of the best brass pedagogy books are by trumpet teachers. Keith Johnson’s “The Art of Trumpet Playing” started me on this path.
I am also studying “The Learning School” audio CDs on the great composers.
Enjoy!
